Conquer a fear by P Wood

Conquer a Fear by Maureen P

This week I faced my fear of making 3 dimensional items and made myself a thread catcher and a bowl cozie using what I found in my closet.

Don't know why I was so intimidated, they were so much easier than I thought.
Thanks for the challenge to face my fears!!

Change Mountain by J Harris

My piece is called: Change Mountain

There have been some big changes in my life recently. Change is always hard and scary for me and these changes have been no exception. These changes have felt like climbing a mountain but I have been facing it head on. Every day I take another step toward the top of Change Mountain by overcoming my fear of "what ifs" replacing them with "what's next" . Change Mountain will be displayed where I will see it every day to remind me that even though change is big and scary it is also a giant opportunity, as long as I keep moving towards the summit.

Dimensions: 15" x 10"
Inspired by a photograph, no pattern used.

Sliding Rock by Beverly H

The leap and exhilaration of trying completely new. Jumping off a waterfall into a wonderful pool of the unknown, sliding down Sliding Rock here in our mountains…the exhilaration, the scare of exposing oneself, the rebirth ,taking the leap knowing many supportive folks are all around. Pushing, sliding past disapproval, criticism, negativity , yes fear into a pool of hands and arms ready.

Wasp Quilt by Avery D

Avery, 10 years old, wanted to make a wasp quilt for the Conquer a Fear Challenge.

She wanted yellow, black, and brown fabrics.  When she layed out the strips, she really didn't like the brown with it, so she changed it to just yellow and black.  She found a cute frog fabric in my stash to use for the back.  She said it was funny because frogs eat bees.

Then we scrolled through the decorative stitches on my machine and Avery found a design that looked like a honeycomb.

Avery is very proud of her Bee Quilt.

Inset Seams by Teri D

I decided to do something with inset seams for the Conquer a Fear Challenge.

I bought a Kaffe Fassett kit, even though it has inset seams. I haven't been brave enough to try it because I don't want to mess it up. I decided to reduce the template 50% to try out the blocks for this challenge.

The first block got stretched all out of shape due to bias edges. The next block was better because I took the time to pin the fabric so it couldn't stretch out of place. That really helped.

I thought that I was doing fine until I realized that a lot of sections had an extra fold in the corner with diamonds when I ironed the blocks. I decided to leave it since you can't tell by just looking at it. So, I haven't mastered inset seams yet, but I know I'll do better next time.

Dimension in Design by Tracy R

Afraid of using dimension in design. Tried hand sewing, and pulling thread in an attempt to give puffy look to pumpkin ball.

I have a big fear of buzzzzing bees nearby! I certainly don't hate them tho.. But will run around like a bezerk if one goes for me!... I found some fabric I marbled years ago and decided to use some... I have made a kind of slip cover for.... something still.. The little bee is collage and the flower was in the marbling so I just brightened it a bit with intense pencils which was a fun change.

Phone Call by Jacomina

This week I conquered my fear of calling a friend of mine who would have gotten the results from her MRI and scans to tell her whether the radiation treatment she got for cancer had been successful or not. The lilac ribbon says it all: she is a cancer survivor (actually multiple times over by now, hence my fear).
https://www.verywellhealth.com/cancer-ribbons-colors-meanings-2249253

The pattern for the phone comes from Kelli Fannin
https://www.kellifanninquilts.com/2020/10/telephone-quilt-block-tutorial.html
I have seen her patterns for National Days and all those very small pieces had never appealed to me. But they fit! (another challenge overcome, not necessarily a fear)

But I had also seen this vintage phone pattern where the receiver was off the hook and I liked that better for expressing that I actually called and got the message. https://www.etsy.com/listing/756858594/vintage-phone-pattern-phone-quilt-block?gpla=1&gao=1&
I used electric wire to make it even more realistic.

The background expresses all the emotions running through me, fear as well as elation at the news. The red around the phone is also the fear.

Curves by Lola Z

I am afraid of, don’t like curves. Also quilting is a bit of a challenge. I saw this in a book, decided to try it. All done. Not perfect, but done!!! Practice makes perfect.

Conquer Your Fear by Liz M

My quilt is made from a fabric panel. My inspiration is to try and not give up.

Norman Rockwell was commissioned to paint these images by the Saturday Evening Post. He was afraid that he could not adequately represent the power of these values but found his inspiration in his local community.

Four Freedoms
The 1943 painting traces its inspiration back to the 1941 State of the Union address by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in which he outlined four democratic values that he considered essential to preserve: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.

Conquer a Fear by Nancy I

I picked the Swedish Heart Table Runner pattern from the INNOVA web site to learn to use many of the embroidery functions on my INNOVA longarm sewing machine. Quite a while ago, I ordered the fabric, thread, and Appli-stick which they recommended. I've been afraid to try various embroidery computer functions on my machine. If not for this challenge, things would still be sitting in a pile.

On Sunday I sewed on the borders and loaded the backing, batting, and runner onto my machine.

It took all day on Monday for my husband to set up the machine to embroider the border. I realized I had chosen fabrics from the layers in the layer cake that were too busy and the embroidery thread was too dull. You could hardly see the embroidery that took so long to do.

On Tuesday it took all day to figure out the digital patterns to embroider one heart.

On Wednesday, trying different methods, two more hearts were embroidered. I was ready to quit.

On Thursday, two more hearts were embroidered.

On Friday the last two of the 7 hearts were finished. We had to mask the hearts and the border in order to quilt a digital pattern in the background.

On Saturday we chose an embroidery heart pattern to go just inside of the border. Trimmed the runner and sewed on the binding.

If not for my husband, I would have failed this mission. I know that sewing the thread on the fabric to duplicate what is on the screen is not easy, even after one learns how the various embroidery functions operate.

Cut Time, Quilt More

Controlled Chaos by Becky H

Controlled chaos.

This little quilt has 56 strips of fabric to signify how many days until I retire on May 12th! I tried some new things - scrappy with no real theme, did a faced binding.

my fear was that I won't get everything done at work before I leave!

Conquer a Fear by Jackie J

I have been sitting on this project for a couple months and I could just never get started. I kept on going back and forth about making it for a(different) friends birthday. I was afraid she wouldn’t like it. I opened FB this morn and saw your post about this weeks challenge. Ding ding ding.

My greatest fear is giving a gift from my heart and the receiver not liking it. So thank you for this challenge and allowing me to confront my fear.

I avoid mitered corners for most of my projects, but attempted them for this challenge. This was frustrating piece for me, but I persevered.

Binding by Maren R

The last challenge also slipt my calender because i took care of a sick puppy from the animal shelter where I volunteer on El Hierro Island.

So Thursday i got a little panicked but knew what fear i wanted to conquer immediately: Traditional binding with a hand stiched back.

I always thought this seems so boring and time consuming and my patience for hand stiching is not existent and therefore i finished my pieces without binding, with fake bindings or facings so far.

I wanted to make several placemats with my sea fabrics and try different tradional binding techniques. I finished only one. My hands are claws. Cramps in all fingers. Can you get gout from hand stiching? And i produced edges which have the feel of bumpy knots. Arrgh. And ugly in the back too.
Well i definetly did not conquer the traditional binding and fear the other placemats will get a fake binding:)

But thank you so much for this wonderful challenge. I enjoyed every single one. Looking very much forward to the next one.

Fabric Meets Paper & Cork by Eva

Fabric meets Paper & Cork
This week I need long time to find a start. Fortunately I could went yesterday to one of my favorite quit shops and get a piece of cork - I desired long time.
I knew I want to use scraps of my current project „SAHRR 2023“ - because with this project I was going out of my hammock.
And going out of the hammock … means to stopp doing what’s safe and comfy.

In a special way it is a doubled conquer a fear
1. doing the SAHRR 2023 - without any knowledge how it will come out and without any plan
2. doing the work with cork - showing here

it is a project I wanted to do long time
was afraid - if the machine will do it
was afraid - if the paper will work in as I want it to be
was afraid - to do it as always within last minute sewing

What do you see in the pictures:
* front „page“ or cover of the little note book
* quilt lines - free motion
* searched to envelopes - and !! without measuring the envelopes fits into the cover
* sewing a place for taks (zebra fabric)
* and on the last pictures you see there are four places for little notes - you will store

So - i went out of the box and I did not what’s safe and comfy - I tried something really new and do not stagnate
because herewith I combined fabric and paper - a long time wish of mine.
The dog in the hammock represents a tag and it was so lovely fitting to the theme - I have to put this picture in.
