The Bees are A Buzzin

Last Saturday, February 24th was my daughter Capri’s birthday.  She had a basketball tournament in the morning.  One of her friends, Addison M, came over after the tournament to hang out and have cake. The girls decided it would be fun if Addison made a quilt for the Mellow Yellow Challenge.

Addy and Capri worked together to create this adorable Bee quilt made easily because of Therm O Web HeatNBond Lite.  Simple fancy stitching was done as the quilting and Addison loved the hand binding part. She used a black Fabrico Fabric marker to add details to the bees.  When my husband dropped her off at home, she wouldn’t get out of the car because she was sewing!  LOL!

This was completed in time for the challenge deadline but unfortunately forgotten before the tournament the next day.  I love getting kids excited about sewing and quilting!

Honeybee by Cherese Currier

Here is my entry for #projectquilting 9.4 Mellow Yellow.

Yellow is a tough color for me. I like it as an accent but not generally as the star player. I had an idea early on, but some posted pretty much what i had planned. I saw someone else post the same comment. I guess yellow and bees just go together. I started brainstorming again and decided on A Yellow Submarine. I really wasn't all that excited about it though. I went back to my original idea of a bee in a honeycomb background, but morphed it a bit. I added some flowers to the design.

20180225_092747

Bees take pollen from beautiful flowers and turn it into a golden nectar that sweetens our lives. This seems like a nice tribute to that wonderful feat.

Honeybee is 13" x 17.5". It is machine pieced, fusible applique, and thread painted.

Project Quilting Challenge 9.4  ~ Mellow Yellow

Yellow reminded me of bees so I chose an old fashioned beehive to work in this week. I liked the collage technique so much I decided to use that again!  I've been wanting to try thread painting so I did that for 2 of the bees.

My quilt is 10x16.  A wonderful placemat!

Mellow Yellow Day by Susan

I’m so excited, this is my first time doing something like this and I didn’t even get time to research it all, so I hope I’m doing things right.

image1 (3)
When I heard the challenge title what came to mind was our last day out on the boat when the sun was shining like this in a cloudless blue sky, I knew it was going to be a Mellow Yellow day!

image4
I made this to be a suncatcher so I didn’t back it because I wanted the light to come through so I could pretend the sun was shining in my sewing loft in the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina.  Most of the year I’m in sunny Key West, as I am now, so I’ll be bringing sunshine with me to NC when I next go!

image2
I took a pic outside to give you an idea of the suncatcher idea.

I forgot to tell you it’s 21”x21”

In Memory of Mom by Kaye Dail

I have only been quilting for about 1.5 years and just once a month with friends.  Another friend added me to Project Quilting for this Challenge season.  It took me until this week to figure out something to submit.  This is the first quilt I've made by myself.

20180225_145308_0

This little quilt is about 13.5" square and is made of fabrics I had here at home.  My sister and I grew up in a house with a yellow and green kitchen.  Mom's favorite color was blue, hence the star, and so this quilt is in memory of our mom who just passed away in November.  The purple is from a quilt I made and gave my sister for Christmas.

I managed to finish in about six hours over two days.

Laying Under the Maple Tree by Jana C

Remember your childhood years, playing outside on a hot day. Looking for the shade of the big maple tree, you lay down on the cool green grass under the umbrella of leaves. Spending time in amazement at the perspective of the tree, you realize, life was good.

image1 (6)

This quilt is 20” x 20”. I started by drawing the big leaf and transferring it to interfacing. I cut up a variety of yellows, placing them inside the leaf. After ironing the scraps on, I sprayed a thin layer of glue, covered the leaf with a fine yellow tulle and sewed it on around the edges. The wool tree and branches were machine sewn.

I worked on this during two snow storms in North Branch, Minnesota.

Mellow Yellow Violin by Lisa Pearson

Here is my entry for the Mellow Yellow Project Quilting Challenge. I didn't finish last time because I couldn't settle on an idea; this time I decided I would do the first thing I thought of, which turned out to be a violin.

20180224_182207

The body of the violin is a mosaic of yellow scraps, the neck and chin rest are cut from Brown string blocks I had in my ufo's and the strings are represented through yellow laser cut ribbon I have. This is pretty artsy for me! The quilt measures about 30" x 20".

“Dick’s Tulip with a Van Gogh Twist” by Diane Crawford

"Dick's Tulip with a Van Gogh Twist". My first thought was to create a Yellow Submarine. On the same day as the theme was announced, my friend, Dick, posted this picture of a tulip. I've been working recently on fused landscapes, a new technique for me. This was another opportunity to practice.

PQ 9.4 Mellow Yellow 2 Dick's Tuplip ith a Van Gogh Twist 12.5 inches

In looking through my stash, my recently acquired Hoffman Van Gogh fabric screamed to be used, so I couldn't say no. This project measures in at 12 1/2".

I machine pieced the yellow strips, and hand quilted using sashiko embroidery threads. I wish I could say this used up a lot of my yellow scraps, but it barely made a dent! This was a good week for this challenge as it certainly brightened up these dreary days!

Mellow Yellow Sewing Machine Cover by Debbie H

This is my first challenge though I have followed it for awhile and I'm always inspired by all the projects. I purchased this fabric a couple years ago without a specific project in mind. So when this challenge {Mellow Yellow} was posted I decided it was time to participate!

IMG_20180224_174330524

The cover for my sewing machine needed to be replaced, so I made this cover using the quilt as you go method. It's quite large, 24 x 12 x 11 and fits my machine perfectly. There's enough fabric leftover to make a coordinating window valance.

I create in Waterloo Wisconsin.

By JeanAnn Fenrich, playing with fiber and fabrics in Scandia, Minnesota.

Dandelions certainly are obnoxious. But you have to admit a field or yard dotted with a yellow carpet of Dandelions can be a lovely site. Braiding the stems to make a yellow crown of flowers or sending the seeds soaring in the wind fill carefree summer days for many children.

2_Fabric and thread

The background (blue > yellow) ombre fabric is a Gelato by Daiwabo. I had a good selection of yellow bits to make petals. A black print was used for the stem and flower head. Green grass was a piece of dark green batik. Embroidery thread was used for all quilting.

3_Testing the stem and petals

Testing petals to gauge how many I might want to throw to the wind.

4_Wind quilted

“Wind” lines placed first.

5_sticthing grass_placing stem

Background grass thread painted.

6_Wind quilted_testing grass

Rough cut dark green grass blades.

I was surprised I ended up with 100 petals. Each was stitched to make sure all stayed in place.

This small wall hanging was sandwiched with thin batting and the edge binding matched the color on each side.

Mellow Yellow by Jen Mulder

The first thing to come to my mind was the song "Bright as Yellow" by Innocence Mission.   This very simple quilt popped into my head.    Then I second guessed it for a few hours, thought about bargello quilts, Minions, Pikachu, Sponge Bob and other options, but I kept coming back to this one so I went for it.   IMG_3047I picked out 11 shades of Kona Cotton solids.

IMG_3040

The piecing is sort of like if you took a small rectangle of a bargello quilt and magnified it by 100.  IMG_3052The back has very small rubber ducks about 1/2" x 1/2" all over.  The quilting is freehand sunflowers from the song - "flower scarlet, flower gold, and have no thorns to distance me"

IMG_3054

I plan on donating this quilt to Gilda's Club for one of their fund raising efforts.   I quilt in Madison, WI.

Mellow Yellow Kitty by Vasha R

Just finished a comfort quilt "Sunshine and Rainbows" so there was a lot of yellow lying around.

cat2better

Also working on a Kaffe Fasset cat quilt from Jordan Fabrics, so I had this cat outline that cried out for personality and it all came together in this Mellow Yellow Kitty with mouse snacks (sprinkles are chocolate and the ones with outlines are sugar free) and a martini. How mellow can this cat be? Very!!

Tired of Giving in by Andrea M

"Tired of Giving In"

Laser printer on muslin, cotton fabric, cotton batting, cotton thread. Machine quilted. 11.5" x 11.5"

Rosa_Parks_Quilt

Shortly after I read this week's theme last Sunday, I saw a news story about it being the 105th anniversary of Rosa Parks' birth. Rosa Parks was unquestionably brave and bold, as were the many others who stood up for themselves (and others) by marching, sitting in, registering voters, protesting, etc., during the Civil Rights Movement. My quilt honors their bravery and sacrifice. The title is from a Rosa Parks' quote explaining why she didn't give up her seat on the bus, "People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true. I was not tired physically ... No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in."
