Eagles Nest by Robyn W

The moment I read “Bird House,” I knew what I wanted to create. We’ve had a seasonal cabin and now a year-round home on Big Sand Lake in Park Rapids, MN since 1987. This nest is located on the north side of the lake, about three miles from our home. We often drive in to the yard where the abandoned barn is in hopes of seeing one or both eagles on the nest but so far, haven’t spied them. However, we frequently spot eagles soaring above our home on the east side of the lake; one morning I watched a fledgeling on our hill eat a very large Northern Pike he’d plucked out of our cove several minutes earlier!

For those interested, Bald eagles prefer to return to the same place to breed and nest every year. Once a successful nest is established, pairs of Bald eagles will stay and maintain it year-round. The nest size will increase each year as they re-use the nest and add sticks to it. They may use the same nest annually for as many as 35 years.

I have no idea how long this nest has been here; we noticed it six or seven years ago but judging by its size I’m guessing it’s been around a lot longer! My goal this season is to use what I have on hand, including my small collection of threads and fabrics I bring with me each winter. I have both Aurifil 50 wt cottons and Madeira Rayons but used only cotton for this particular Challenge.

This is the first piece I’ve thread painted and I’m finding the technique interesting and challenging but I’m hooked.

My piece finished out at 12 x 15 1/2”

Created by Robyn Wimmer for the Project QUILTING 15.1 Bird House Challenge.
