Red Ripples

I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do with "texture". I've never really been one to embellish quilts with other items. So I decided to start by focusing on patterns. image1 (7)I quickly remembered that I love flooring / tiles and often think how they'd make a nice quilt. Here was my chance to try it!

I started with a basic floor time pattern from my church:
I knew I'd need to change the colors from the drab brown/cream and opted for fabric I felt showed different textures.
I started with 8 blocks but realized I needed to make it longer for a table runner so went up to 12 blocks.image4
I thought the borders would be the perfect place to add more texture!  At first I wanted to add some Canadian smocking, but after some trials decided it wasn't going to work well with cotton or this scale.image3 (1) I switched to tucks and wave tucks which worked perfectly!image3 (2)
For the quilting I added some antique silver metallic thread with a decorative stitch and echoed with some wobbly stitches in red and silver. Some purple binding and complete!

  1. What a great interpretation! (I often find flooring to be fascinating)
