“On a Limb” by Barb R

This is my first attempt for your quilt challenge (Project QUILTING 8.3 – Tuned In To Texture).  I have attached a picture of my 16 x 20" placemat and a little information on how I decided on this.

I made a 16x20" placemat entitled "On a Limb."  I gave the tree trunk and branch some texture by free motion quilting a wood grain pattern. For the owl's body I used fabric that somewhat mimics feathers, which is another texture in nature.  The owl and moon are appliques.  When trying to come up with a project, I was thinking of textures in nature.  Since trees have a lot of texture, I thought it would be fun to include a tree on my quilt and attempt to free motion the wood grain.  Both of my grandchildren love birds, so I decided to make an owl to sit on the branch. This was my first attempt for the quilt challenge and I enjoyed designing and sewing the quilt.
