My Favorite 8 by Kristin McCoy

"My Favorite 8"

PQ 8-1 "8 is Great"

12 inch Square

This piece has my 8 favorite fabrics in my hexie scrap box. I have a scrap box with 2.75 inch squares that will someday be a 1 inch hexie, then go into an insanity postage stamp style top, I have yet to start because the insanity hasn't quite hit me yet . Then as I appliqued it, I folded the fabric to center it and planned on straight line quilting it but those 8 unplanned quadrants I made, gave me an awesome lightbulb moment!!!

CYMERA_20170108_092011

So I free motion quilted my 8 favorite, go to designs!!!! Because I've been down this week sick ( seems like every first week it's something, for example 3 years ago during the first week my little guys came 2.5 weeks early!!) I decided last night I had to try to make something!! I think I work best under pressure :) I create in the middle of nowhere Dickens, Tx.

Eight Birds on a Wire by Liz M

Project Quilting 8
Eight is Great

This is my entry for the Project Quilting 8.1
Eight is Great.
I call this
Eight Birds On A Wire.

IMG_0814
We have been snowed in for a couple days now and my inspiration for this project came to me while watching the birds outside at our feeders. The feeder was empty one morning and they were waiting and it was just getting light outside. The silhouette of the birds in the early morning light gave me an idea for this quilt.

Size of the quilt is 21 inches wide by 16 inches high.

Essential Oil Holder by Mary

I needed a new holder for my essential oils. I've made a few of these before, and I make them by quilting 2 fabric scraps and a scrap of batting, each 6"x21".

image1 (2) (1)

For this one, I decided to also use a scrappy binding with 8 different fabrics to make this project look a little more interesting. Once the holder is done it is 3.5"x21" with room for 10 essential oil bottles.image2 (2)

I've included 2 pictures: one of it flat on the table, one with the oils inside.

Only Eight by JeanAnn Fenrich

I am JeanAnn Fenrich, retired and enjoying working with fabric and fiber in Maple Grove, MN.

My piece is 17" x 12".

Title: "Only Eight"

jeanann 1

It wasn't long ago scientist decided Pluto was not a planet so we only have 8 in our solar system now.  Fabric for my solar flare didn't naturally shift from dark to light so I cut it apart in 1" squares to reassemble in values I preferred. Found 8 bits in my stash that 'felt' like planets. This year I want to better my skills with satin stitch so decided to use a varying width to create each planet's path. jeanann 2

This may be my art quilt this week, but think my grandson might enjoy as a placemat for lunch.

Star Trivet by Cassandra N

Here is my finished block for 8 is Great–Challenge 1 of Project QUILTING Season 8!!! The finished size is 11" x 11", I used English Paper Piecing for the first time.

15936335_1211639075556058_3690172335245928719_o

My inspiration was just using what I had on hand to do something I had never done before. This is my very first fully finished block and I couldn't be happier with it. It was surely a challenge but one that I enjoyed. I made it to be a pan trivet and used an old 100% cotton towel as the betting to prevent any melting (only batting I have is 100% polyester). The backing was cut from an old T-shirt that was on it's way to the trash. I love the idea of using things that would normally be thrown out to make something useful and beautiful.

Mom’s Blouses by Sue Ryan

Mom was born on 8/8/28 and made her 88th birthday this past August! Sadly, she passed away in October after a brief illness.

susan ryan picture

When I saw the prompt "Eight is great!", there was NO question that my quilt would include some material from a few of her blouses!susan ryan quilt

I made 8 eight inch blocks,  most consisting of 8 pieces! The piece is 16" x 32" and will hang in my sewing room, or perhaps be used as a cheery table runner. The two florals and the gingham fabric in the binding were cut from her blouses. Mom was a master knitter and was a real cheerleader for my (modest) quilting efforts! I was so happy that my first participation in Project Quilting was for the "Eight is great!" theme!

Thank you!

August Heat by Mary Gabrich

Here is my entry for Project Quilting – Eight is Great. I call it August Heat.  When I thought of 8 the eighth month came to mind.

IMG_2052

August is usually a very warm month and living in Sheboygan WI, on the shores of Lake Michigan, you go to the beach to cool off. What better thing to take than a quilted beach towel. This towel measures 47 inches by 74 inches. The design was pieced using 8 batik fabrics and then appliqued on to terry cloth. I quilted this in Madison WI.

8 by 8 by 8 by Claudia M

8 by 8 by 8
for Project QUILTING Challenge – Eight is Great

My piece includes many types of eights starting with the Beatles' Eight Days a Week (8 rays of the sun), eighth letter of the alphabet, 8 is a cardinal number, classic Magic 8 Ball, traditional pinwheel block, eighth letter of Greek alphabet - theta, Roman numeral 8 and a figure 8.

image1 (3)

The 8 blocks are in the 8 colors found in a box of Crayola classic markers, in the order of the color wheel if you  travel in a figure 8  (yellow, orange, red, violet, blue, green then brown and black).  The piece measures 8 inches wide and 18 inches long thus the name 8 by 8 by 8!

Project QUILTING Challenge 8.1 – Eight is Great

IMG_0671

I was inspired by the art gallery painting to experiment with layering.  I found the work of Carol Ann Waugh, Stitch and Slash, very helpful to the process of creating the layered look.  I appreciated the open ended creativity that the challenge choice allowed for rather than having to use a specific block pattern. In this case I have used eight layers to create this 8 by 11 inch art quilt called Going Around in Circles.

FullSizeRender (1)

I have decided to use the Project Quilting challenges to experiment with new techniques that I haven't done before.    I used this Stitch and Slash circular technique and I also faced the back of the quilt where I typically put on a binding.
