Here are FOUR incredible Scrappy House Block quilts made by Jenedel Wilcox.

She made these all during this past year and they were inspired by the 2020 Scrap Quilt Challenge.

One Elephant Went Out to Play by Diane Crawford

This is my third year participating in Project Quilting, and it’s always so much fun! Once again, I called upon my 30 years of teaching preschool, kindergarten and first grade.

 This 18” x 18” quilt depicts one of our counting rhymes, “One Elephant Went Out to Play”. He goes out to play on a spider’s web one day and he has so much fun that he calls for another elephant to come out to play with him. Then the two call for a third, and so forth. Big fun all around!!

Butterflies by Mary C

This is my first entry in a challenge quilt. In making this quilt I used the scraps from heart blocks quilts my friends and I made to help the victims of the Paradise fire. Those scraps are the butterflies. "Butterflies are deep and powerful representations of life. . . .. Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope, and life." (Credit to butterflieswithwings website.) Since emotions are raw I used raw edge applique (a new technique for me). Everyone's emotions are different and the butterflies are not exact in size representing those differences. I felt that after the fire, hope was something that everyone needed, and my wish is that everyone can find it.

Baby Ferns by Irene Floyd

I have always been fascinated by baby ferns unfurling.  Apart from their beauty, they are a symbol of new life.
My quilt is 25.5" by 22.25". I appliquéd the spirals and then machine quilted them heavily to achieve the texture I wanted. The background fabric was a serendipitous find in my stash.

This is my finished project for PQ10.1 Hope Springs Eternal. My hope is for more grace and peace in my everyday life and bless someone every day. A simple thank you. Pay for the person behind me in the drive through. Take a moment to listen when you’re in a hurry. Give a hug.

I enjoyed adding a little mixed media to my project. The old spoon ... some broken jewelry. I would like to explore this a little more. It was fun. Trying something new. That’s why I love this challenge.

Through the Cracks HOPE by Sandra Miller Pitts

Title:   Through the Cracks HOPE

12x12 pillow

Brick pattern quilt block hand quilted with big stitch quilting
Appliqué is felted and over dyed wool

Inspiration:

A persistent little purple flower growing in a crack in our asphalt driveway each summer.  We no longer have that home but I still remember looking for that little purple flower each year.  It always made me smile.
Thank you very much for this assistance.

I had so much fun doing this project using everything I had on hand.

Cancer Survivors Unite!

Project Quilting Challenge 10.1 ~ Hope Springs Eternal 

This was created for an online challenge called Project Quilting. You get a week to complete a whole quilt based on a theme.  Anyone can vote for their favorite. 

When I heard the theme was Hope Springs Eternal, the first thing I thought of was the cancer ribbons offering hope to patients.  I discovered there are more than 25 official colors promoting cancer awareness, with pink for breast cancer being the most recognized.  I thought it would be good to bring all of the different colors together in one ribbon to offer hope to all. 

I made this quilt in honor of all cancer survivors.  My quilt is 16x16. 

I will update this post when I get the link to vote.  Voting will close on Friday, January 18 at 8pm, CST.

Hope Springs Eternal by Joan B

I've been watching the PQ Challenge from afar for a few years and have been amazed at the creative process.  Just retired and have wanted to get back to being creative with my quilts so here's my first attempt.  I used scraps and fabrics from my stash to create Hope Springs Eternal.  I was inspired by the PQ Mystery - I "love" PQ with the lettering appearing in the design so I used 1 1/2 inch squares to write HOPE.

 

I found the green fabric that was perfect for raw appliqué of the grass for Spring and attempted to create the eternity symbol throughout the border.  A friend of mine suggested I give it to an oncology clinic which made me think of how hopeful I am for the cure of cancer.  My final project ended up 28x12.  It could be a small runner or a wall hanging.

Pineapple Paradise by Diane C

The thought of pineapples made me think of Hawaii. I found an illustration on Print Shop of a tropical island. Here's my interpretation, using pineapple blocks to create the important features.

Summer Rocks by Diane C

Summer Rocks—You can reach right up and touch the sky.  This project is 13” x 13”.  As a Baby Boomer, I thought that some summer rock and roll would fill the bill quite well. 

My design was inspired by a couple of pictures I found  on Google Images with hands reaching toward the sky.  When I sing this song, I always say, “When the weather is high.”  I’m partial to lyrics that actually rhyme.

Finally … by Jen Mulder

This is my entry for the Finally off season challenge.      I have been weaving a ton since taking Tara's class on the Wefty Needles.   I have made a bunch of different panels which are not free standing, but haven't made them into anything.... so FINALLY I DID!  

I made this kaleidoscope weave panel of Kona Cotton Solids and matched it with some black canvas and hot pink thread to make this large tote bag.

Finally … always a Cause for Celebration by Diane C

Here is "Finally...always a cause for celebration". My brainstorming took me through a variety of ideas, and eventually I settled on the thought that when something FINALLY happens, there's usually a reason to celebrate. I originally chose a green color scheme for this project, thinking about Kim and Trisha and the cold April they'd had (I'm in the San Francisco Bay area).

But when I retrieved a finished 6" block to help me determine the appropriate size to make the letters, the block contained the fireworks fabric. Well, what better way to celebrate than with fireworks?--regardless of when the celebration is or what you're celebrating.  Enjoy!

Dreaming of Spring by Carol K

Lots of Plusses by Robin J

This is my Lots of Plusses, it is 12" square, I dug through lots of remains of finished quilts to get 12+ scrap fabrics.

I really wanted to do a big modern version of this but my time was limited due  to the arrival of our son and his family today and staying through Easter....yea, lots of hugs and juicy kisses!

I've wanted to do black thread free motion applique and started designing and cutting,. But when I tried free motion, I didn't like it. So I put my walking foot on and  stitched  away.

When I trimmed the batting to bind it, I really liked the way it looked with the black stitching showing, I really didn't want to cover it up. I will definitely do more black thread applique, but I'll use a more soft, curvey design that I can free motion.

Spiral Mosaic

This is my scrappy entry. I have been wanting to try a mosaic quilt for a while and this seemed like a good time.  I fused the pieces of fabric down and quilted spirals of matching threads. I used 24 colored fabrics.  The piece is 16 inches square.

Marine Footlocker Topper

Project Quilting Challenge 9.6  ~ Scraptastistic

We had to use at least 12 different fabrics for this week’s Project Quilting Challenge.  I also needed to make a topper for my cousin’s “coffee table”. 

He uses his dad’s footlocker from when he was in the Marines back in the 1960s.  Since the footlocker was green, and I didn’t have any greens that would match it, I decided to use mostly blues with pops of green. 

I found 6 greens, 6 blues and decided on a 9 patch set on point.  He wanted it very puffy, so I used 1 layer of Hobbs with 2 layers of poly batting over it.  I used a double needle to quilt with blue thread through the greens.  I love how it turned out!  My cousin and his wife both loved it too! 

My quilt is 40x19.  A wonderful topper for the footlocker!

Easter Confetti by Diana H

I've completed this week's challenge!

I pulled out my hand dyed fabrics and tried a new technique for me to make a collage using raw edge applique.  It made a cute table runner.

The pastel pallet is reminiscent of Easter colors. How timely!

I've called it Easter Confetti.
