Didn't Go to Paris by Liz S

This is inspired by the vacation that didn’t happen. My husband died January of 2020 and that year was our 50th wedding anniversary. We had not scheduled a trip ahead because of surgeries. We usual go to France every other year and I always wear a hat because I burn easily.

I cut out the middle of 2 round straw place mats. They were difficult to work with as they started to unravel when cut. This is a bag, like a beach bag, and a hat. Modgepodged appliques on the top crown are some of the reminders of trips to Paris. I used the black fabric as a reminder of loss. A sleeve joins the 2 cutout mats and a crown is attached in between. It is pushed thru to either side to show a plain crown or one with the appliques.

The bag strap can be used as a decorative band and bow on the hat or used under the head on windy days. With the extra crown piece I made a mini purse with a ribbon and Tour de France emblem. I am very proud that the concept worked.

  1. thanks Kim. New to all this electronic details.
I didn't mention that I had had the mats for a while after we went to a quilt show in France ,and the guild had made beach bags out of round mats. I thought it was a neat idea but never got around to doing one, just bought the mats. And was it hard to find 2 matching, which was what I wanted. I met many quilters in France even though we always vacationed on our own. Same complaints, of the quilt stores are closing! Some of them didn't allow photos which I respected but wish I had those mementos of them. the only problem is the bag is not user friendly. If I made one again I would either leave off the donut hole crown and make the sleeve tube longer and twist it to form the to of the crown, which would give more bag space. Liz

  2. What an inventive project and a great display of memories of France!! I'm sorry for the loss of your husband. I know that means 2020 was doubly hard for you. Here's hoping quilting is helping you cope.

  3. Working on the snail trail. Not really into blog posts or photo posts. Picked out two fabrics and ironed and sewed. Remember this block from on point center, bias, and triangles. Not my finest work
