Journey to California aka Snail Trail by Robyn W

Journey to California aka Snail Trail

Robyn Wimmer

As a life-long hater of snails, I almost didn’t participate in this week’s Challenge! Ok, hate is a strong word so let me just say, I’ve always found them disgusting. I also had the last of five Project Linus tops that I needed to finish quilting. BUT I value the opportunity to learn a new skill so I decided to make a block. Mine is an approximately 12-inch square and is more of a conceptual idea because I decided to call it by the inexplicable name of “Journey to California” that was listed as another name for this pattern.

I’m a Native Californian, transplanted to the Midwest nearly 50 years ago. I’ll always be a California Gurl so I’ve used yellow fabrics to depict the Golden State and if you look closely at the borders, you’ll see starfish, sand dollars, sea urchins and other marine life that lives in the Pacific Ocean along the coastline.

I inadvertently trimmed up to my points but I didn’t have time to start over; I went with what I had and added the borders.

Then it was on to my favorite part off quilting, the binding.

Thanks, Trish for pushing me out of my box. I’m glad I made the block although I’m not sure I’ll ever do it again. That said, I am in awe of the many creative quilts that came out of this block. Two patterns in particular took my breath away; all of the cats and witches are spectacular and kudos to each one of their creators! Thank you ALL, for sharing your talents with us. 😊 ❤️
