Scuba Diving in Bonaire by Sonya E

This challenge really grabbed me.

I miss scuba diving in the ocean with the fish and other creatures. We were in Bonaire last year when our Canadian prime minister told everyone to come home. I will give it to my husband as a gift for Valentines day, as we are still not allowed to go anywhere in Toronto.

Travels to Paris by CarolineMVF

 Bonjour,

Whoa already at mid race in the project!!!

How spoiled I am, I worked with the Paris fabric for PQ-2 and now again it’s right on the dot!!
Also this week, had a birthday gift to make for a 15 year old with theme “France”. And voila!!

 A basket in the making..

Masks for the plane- one day!

And of course a 3D/ origami face mask (forgot the pictures on that make) as they are part of our routine now!!

I have family living in Ireland and would love to visit again.. I was there a few years ago and on the road travels saw this lone man in/on the sea!!?.. Just him and the rock!! No boat near.. So weird. So I quick made this little pic of it from the photo.. Free Motion applique with my hand dyed fabric.. Would like to go back and see if he still stuck out there!!!

Winery Tour by Diana B

 This vacation is touring wineries and collecting bottles to add to our bar. We are looking forward to visiting as many as we can, either in the USA or any where we care to venture. 

This is 12” x 12” and fusible appliqué. The inner border is ragged and the outer border stab stitched with embroidery floss. I used heirloom batting, batik fabric and fusible tricot. The backing is cotton fabric. It has three layers. It was all done by hand.

Kayaking by Robyn W

PQ12.3 Virtual Vacation: Kayaking the Headwaters of the Mississippi River at Itasca State Park, Minnesota.

We spend our spring/summer months about 25 miles from Itasca, Minnesota’s first state park where visitors can actually walk across the Mighty Mississippi! I’m looking forward to going back to Northern Minnesota (we winter in Madison) in a few weeks. We won’t be able to kayak until the ice goes out, probably some time in May, but once that happens… :-)

Other than the sky and kayak fabrics, I used only strips from jelly rolls I’d bought to make two twin-sized rainbow five-patch quilt tops for my granddaughters. I pieced 6” wavy strips together to create the water and used a variety of strips for the trees and banks. I hand embroidered the eagle. I quilted curves for the water and diagonal lines for sunshine in keeping with the simplicity of my scene. My applique and quilt stitches were done in Sulky Blendables variegated threads.

My personal challenge this time was to use only strips but had nothing I could use for the sky (none of the blue strips worked) and the striped orange and yellow fabric was just too perfect for the kayak not to use!


I had decided during PQ12 I’d use only my stash and whatever I made, I’d give away but I’ve ‘failed’ both this time. I plan on hanging this one in my sewing room at the lake. Last year my husband strung wire across the room so I could hang my completed projects. It’s a very nice way to display my work — thanks, Trish and Kim for the idea!

Didn't Go to Paris by Liz S

This is inspired by the vacation that didn’t happen. My husband died January of 2020 and that year was our 50th wedding anniversary. We had not scheduled a trip ahead because of surgeries. We usual go to France every other year and I always wear a hat because I burn easily.

I cut out the middle of 2 round straw place mats. They were difficult to work with as they started to unravel when cut. This is a bag, like a beach bag, and a hat. Modgepodged appliques on the top crown are some of the reminders of trips to Paris. I used the black fabric as a reminder of loss. A sleeve joins the 2 cutout mats and a crown is attached in between. It is pushed thru to either side to show a plain crown or one with the appliques. 

The bag strap can be used as a decorative band and bow on the hat or used under the head on windy days. With the extra crown piece I made a mini purse with a ribbon and Tour de France emblem. I am very proud that the concept worked.

Project Quilting Challenge 12.3 ~ Virtual Vacation

I decided to use my new Inktense pencils to color flamingos, turtles and the sunshine for this quilt. Then I used fabric medium to turn the color into permanent ink.

My quilt is 18”x12”. #ProjectQuilting #pqSeason12

This was created for an online challenge called Project Quilting. You get a week to complete a whole quilt based on a theme. Prizes will be given out by random drawing. Each week is a different theme.

I decided to make all 6 PQ challenges 18”x12” this year so I’ll have a set of placemats when I’m done. I’m putting a different purple batik on the back of each of them so they are reversible. 

 I’m using a different fancy stitch for each to attach the binding. For the label, I’m writing on the back on the binding.

I was registered for a “photo Safari” to the Albuquerque balloon fest last October but it got cancelled. I’ve been saving this camera fabric so luggage tags seemed like a good use. Hopefully I’ll get to go this October.

Virtual Vacation

“I NEED VITAMIN SEA”

The pandemic canceled last summer's tropical adventure to the shores of Maui that I was to share with my granddaughter. Grab your mask and fins as we dive into the South Pacific for my virtual vacation! Gradating colors were selected to reflect the depths of the sea and fussy cut tropical fish are the prize to behold. 

From batiks, I cut and glued organic shapes to build an ocean floor – adding an octopus and jellyfish for fun! All-over tulle was quilted on the top of the quilt to create the blurred view of underwater, seen by the naked eye: but the view through the diver's mask is crisp and clear (no tulle).

Luggage Pouch by Laura M
