Friends with Numbers by Elizabeth Murray

The title of #pqSeason11.1 is “Friends with Numbers”. The dimensions are 6” by 20 inches.

The piece is based on the number 91319, which is the 2020th prime number and coincidentally a palindrome number. Nine patch, one patch, three patch, one patch, nine patch. 

The inspiration is my friend Dr. John Drost at Marshall University, who is a mathematician who loves prime numbers and palindromes. He often posts on royalty and their numeric relationships, so purple fabrics are appropriate too.as I quilted this, I thought of the Girl Scout song. “Make new friends and keep the old. One is silver and the other gold. 

The left 9 patch block is quilted in silver and has silver in the grunge fabric while the right one has gold quilting and gold in the fabric. I was thinking of my old friends at Marshall University as well as new Minnesota friends, who introduced me to project quilting. The one blocks came from my secret Santa friend in Minneapolis modern Quilt Guild and I made the central of the 3 block with a hand dyed fabric from my friends at Textile Center. I did machine quilting with walking foot and five threads, one per block.

Age is Just a Number by Rhende H

Age is "just a number". Other numbers are the important ones: Years with my best friend, children, grandchildren, and hundreds of students throughout the years who have given me loving nicknames (Hage-monster in October) and recently reminded me that age is "just a number".

Golden Spiral by Jenn Lundin

My entry is called Golden Spiral and is 11" x 18". I pieced my squares using the Fibonacci sequence, which it looks like several people did...great minds think alike 

I hand embroidered the spiral and barely finished in time!

Penrose Square by Nancy Horwath

Penrose Square, exists in 2D, but not in 3D

Project Quilting Challenge 11.1 ~ Notably Numeric

My husband suggested using something that exists in 2 dimensions, but cannot exist in 3 dimensions, a Penrose figure. I chose a square and used my number fabric in the background.

This is my first time using a decorative stitch to attach the binding.. I love how it turned out! Thanks to my quilt guild schoolhouse meeting where 4 members shared their talents with the rest of us!

Trust by Sharon Scott

Inspired by Victoria Findlay Wolfe I chose the word “trust” as my focus for 2020. Since last Sunday we had the basement dug for building a new home which we have never done before, hence the focus on topography, verbiage, spreadsheet, framing and landscaping.

This quilt served as a major distraction for me as I also had a hip replaced on Thursday. Lots of “trust” with that too. Looking forward to new challenges as I recover.

On January 23rd, my wonderful son and amazing daughter in law will celebrate their second wedding anniversary. Her favorite color is red and his is green. I made them a king sized heart quilt for their wedding gift, so a heart pillow seems like a good anniversary gift.

Inside the heart it says:

730 days of Friendship
1,051,200 minutes of Togetherness
63,072,000 seconds since you said I DO!

That seems very Notably Numeric to me.

Cozy Family, Quilt by Carol Kunnerup

A kooky, scrappy quilt about life with our 3 children.

We are a blended family so that accounts for the scrappy and though it all works beautifully for us, it might look a little goofy to others.

 I chose flying geese to represent the kids because they have all flown the coop. 3 kids, a hundred, or more little pieces, which together make a comfy, cozy family. I mean quilt. I mean both.

 Oh, and just the simplest of Quilting, 3 rectangles. Done, thank you.

Volvox Mini Quilt by Anneliese B

This is my challenge quilt. I looked to nature for inspiration. I decided on the spherical shape of my favorite algae - volvox. I used the golden ratio to determine the dimensions and used an entire container of seed beads which I later had to dot with paint in order to create a greater contrast with the background.

Not quite what I would have wanted as a final product but I had to work with what I had on hand as I didn't start it until this afternoon (Jan 11).

Detroit by Lynne B

I am notoriously known for my ability to get lost. I live on the Eastside of Detroit and my guild is in Ann Arbor. Construction has been known to close more than one route to get there on Saturdays. Add U of M football and the ride home can be a challenge. I decided to use the inspiration of a subway map to graphically see my options. 

I appliqued the numbers on. Quilt measures 27 inches wide x 16 inches tall

At least now I understand my confusion. Highways that say east are really going north or south. I am doomed !!!

This is a pattern from the book "Christmas at Buttermilk Basin" by Stacy West.  It is wool applique on a kitchen towel, that is then sewn into a door pocket/hanger.

Numbered Mug Rug by Siri Sinha

For the Notably Numeric challenge, I used my stash to make a mug rug on my 1952 Singer featherweight.  I found fabrics with algebra, rulers, and dice on them; why they were in my stash, I have no clue!  

I'm a former language arts teacher, so I threw the alphabet in there too, it has 26 letters!!
