The Phoenix

I just finished a small 14.5 x 16 wall hanging for Project Quilting Season 8 Challenge 6, Time Is Up. The Phoenix, when it's Time Is Up, bursts into flames and a new bird is reborn from the resulting ash. In addition, the rising Phoenix is also the symbol of Atlanta, which also had a sad time call this year.

I live in Kennesaw, GA - just outside Atlanta - and that was a bitter disappointment for us all. I used a black mystical swirl batik for the base and backing, quilted with black thread bird feathers and finished with a machine embroidered Phoenix overlay. The wall hanging is self bound. It does lay flat when hanging but would not straighten out when posing for this picture.
