Sew Not a Square by Judith V

My friend asked for a table topper that was 20 inches round. I made a freezer paper template and cut 2 circles of fabric (the back is floral) and then added striped bias binding. So not a square!

This little fabric storage bin is based on a pattern from AppleGreen Cottage.

The shape is changed to a rectangle to fit better with the challenge. Fabrics are from my stash.

This is my Chantelle Quilt for the No Squares challenge. Many years ago, I went to the Ricky Tims’ Super Quilt Seminar. I always wanted to try out his caveman style quilting, so I thought this would be fun to try for the challenge.

It’s all free-form cutting, so that was a challenge for me. I didn’t like how I cut the pieces, but I decided to just leave it and keep going. I decided I wanted pieced wavy lines in my borders.

After I put on the first two border, I realized that it wasn’t looking like I had pictured it. I stewed about it until 1:00 A.M, and then realized I didn’t have time to do anything else. Once I got the other two borders sewn on, I decided I liked it a lot.

This reminds me to just keep going because it usually works out in the end.

'WAS a Square!'

I named this.. Was a Square.. because the background WAS square!... I fancied trying a sunbird.. They are so cute!..

This is collage/applique and quite fiddley being small but fun! Mostly batiks and hand dyed fabrics.. And then quilting it all down.. Just a small mat for.. not sure yet!!

Sew No Square by Beverly H

Another fun project though spent a lot of time removing machine stitching. Plan, give away all variegated threads! Decided to try to cut and slow curves, will be practicing that again soon.

Charlie Brown Stripes by Nancy I

Charlie Brown Stripes!

That is what one of my friends called my zigzags. This is the first time I downloaded a pattern from the Accuquilt web site and followed the directions. The name they gave their pattern is GO! Take Flight.

I did not follow their choice of colors, because I chose to use fabrics I already had. Even though I used half square triangles, I did not join them to other half square triangles to make squares. The flying geese made lots of rectangles. I used the Effervescence pantograph from Anne Bright Designs. My quilt is 48 x 60 inches. I've enjoyed all of the challenges this year and hope I can finish one more quilt with the next challenge.

Mug Rug by Eva C

Mug rag - calebase center - With this project „not a square“ In left my comfort zone 100%. I am wondering that I was able to do it in the very last moment of this week. And I am so thankfull that Kim said… go for it. This was wath as well my Dad always said, if you really burn for something, than do it.

And I could not resist to do something curvy.

Some of you may recognize this are the fabrics of my SAHRR and the (flying) zebra is here again an eyecatcher.All requirements are done, in this week, not a square, binding and quilted.

It will be interesting to see what will come next!

CW monarch challenge is upon us. Tried some hand stitching to see if I could manifest an idea, small scale! A .75 hexagon, back to the drawing board. Wearing the pink thimble to save my thumb.

Quilted Patchwork Felt Brooch by Maren R

Well the challenge to quilt without using a square itself is no real challenge to me since i am really fond of free cutting and wonky forms and even if i want to use squares they never turn out real squares.... But we have been on a cruise and my husband strongly objected to me bringing the sewing machine on the ship:) and since we had rolling waves and weak power in the cabin it wouldn't have worked anyway. So this project became a real challenge.I wetfelted on the ship and patched and just today after our return i used the maschine to quilt the felt. Into a brooch app. 10 cm x7 cm

Obviously inspired by the Atlantic surounding us.....

NO SQUARES by Kathy P

I have attached the finished quilt photo for the NO SQUARES theme. I liked this challenge, found a couple ideas right away and went to my grab bag stash and WHAT, the fabric said "no, use me". It was the remaining 60 degree triangles I had used in week 4 (54-40) and they demanded to shine again.

So using all, even some miscut triangles I lined them up and used every scrap so no more of this fabric. Definitely no squares in pattern, design, quilting or size. It finished at 10" x 13.5" and even has the mitered corners tacked down in the binding. A done deal.

A Tree Skirt and some Art by Josephine A

This tree skirt was made from scraps using triangle and diamond shaped.

This quilted art piece is mounted on a hoop so it can be hung on the wall. The muted greys allow the centre “I” to be present. The I can symbolize me in a room or an abstract eye if a needle.

Dials by Hannah D

After reading this week's challenge, I knew pretty quickly what I wanted to do. Recently I've been messing around in EQ8 making some designs with curves so I knew I wanted to make a version of that. I used the works of Audrey Esarey as part of my initial inspiration. I love her quilts!

The curved sections were paper pieced. I used a pink batik to add interest to the solid black and white fabrics. Initially I had planned a different layout but after finishing the blocks I experimented with moving them around and decided I liked this arrangement better. The design ended up reminding me of dials, particularly speedometers.
