Sunrise Silhouette by Barb R

 Sunrise Silhouette

I decided to make a small wall hanging for the In Silhouette Project QUILTING challenge. Since I cannot draw at all, I knew that I would need something simple to trace. Earlier in the day, I had driven to Port Washington WI to view Lake Michigan which is only a few miles from my home. There is an art deco lighthouse there. It became my inspiration. I have pictures of the lighthouse so I could trace one and enlarge it on my copier.

I have seen many photographs of the lighthouse at dawn. I looked through my stash of fabrics and pulled some oranges, yellow, and pinks. I found a medium blue print for the water. I had a yellow batik with circles on it so I fussy cut one out for the sun, and placed it in the arch of the lighthouse. I had never sewn a landscape quilt so I watched a video to learn how. Then I watched another video on how to applique. This project was a fun learning experience.

I quilted in the ditch along the seams, then quilted curved lines in the pink at the top. I used a decorative stitch to simulate waves. My project finished at 11" x 16".

  1. LOVE the curved piecing you did for the sky!! Well done on trying something new for your PQ 13.2 challenge entry. Never would have guessed it was your first applique!
