Save the 9 by JeanAnn Fenrich

“Save the 9”

1_Save the 9

15” x 15”

By JeanAnn Fenrich, playing with fiber and fabrics in Scandia, Minnesota.

The second half of the proverb really struck a note with me. My “Stitch in Time” isn’t saving nine stitches, it is saving the 9!  This 9 has a tear in his leg, just like a pre-schooler who has worn a hole in the knee of his jeans. I have always liked saving a good pair of blue jeans with a patch and a few stitches.

2_layout sketch

I spent a lot of time doodling and finally had a concept.  I started by sketching the 9 in cartoon style and surrounding it with hourglass line-art.

3_fabric and thread

The background fabric is a Moda Grunge (green). The body of the 9 is a faux red suede. (I'll never use that for binding again - way too much stretch and bulky in corners). Arms/hands are yellow batik and the mouth and border are orange batik. Embroidery thread was used on satin and background sketches.

4_hourglass stitching

Layers basted and then hourglasses stitched in various sizes to fill background. The appliqué was added next.

5_closeup tear

Tear in the fabric is mended with red embroidery floss. The needle left in place is a Boye Tapestry 22 (Package says 7 needles 15¢  - guess it is decades old!)

This is one of those projects that will end up in a box of my sewing history – just for fun.

created for the Project QUILTING Challenge “A Stitch in Time”.
