Standing Tall by JeanAnn Fenrich

“Standing Tall”

19” x 19”

JeanAnn Fenrich, playing with fiber and fabrics in Scandia, Minnesota.

For 27 years I lived in Martin County Minnesota where many small towns are surrounded by fields of corn, soy beans, cattle and hog buildings. I am so proud to have been a part of the community that supported the many farm families. How fortunate we are to have an agricultural community dedicated to raising the crops and animals that feed all of us.

Standing Tall in Minnesota

I picked 3 stalks of corn (Standing Tall) to represent the sweet corn people enjoy, the feed for animals and all the many by-products corn brings to the world.

The background is pieced from Moda’s Composition line. The inspiration for the cornstalks came from Google copyright free pictures. I thought I might make my piece dimensional so I quilted the background before adding the raw edge appliqué. The corns on the cobs were stitched with a decorative stitch on my Bernina. The leaves have some free motion stitching and I stole bits of wool yarn from my knitting stash for the corn silk.  Because the location is not easily identified, I wanted to add the community name and decided to use the Longitude and Latitude for Fairmont, which is the County Seat for Martin County. Farm equipment is so sophisticated today AG producers depend on GPS so it was logical to use this location and it was machine embroidered.

  3. A lovely mini quilt. I live near a rural town too, and they are such valuable places, which deserve celebrating.
