For this week's project I used 41 different ties and made an envelope case for a 16 by 16 pillow form. On the back the wide end of the ties are used for the opening of the envelope. On the front the ties radiate from the center with, of course, a red carnation right in the middle. No truly well dressed man would never leave home without a red carnation.

I used quilting, sewing and handwork for the flower techniques for this project. I've been collecting ties for a number of years and am glad to finally have an opportunity to use some of them.

Tie One On

Project Quilting Challenge #8 – Tie One On

My first thought when I saw this week’s challenge theme was ZZ Top’s Sharp Dressed Man (thank you for the link, Kim, and it’s amazing how many times I heard ZZ Top on the radio this week!) Beyond 80’s rock, I was kind of stumped for inspiration, but I think my mind wandered in directions similar to many of the other contributors:

Military Uniform
Navy dress blues
Mariner’s Compass

This train of thought got me to a sufficiently quilty place, and I’ve always wanted to play around with mariner’s compass designs, so I stopped pondering and got to work looking through my patterns and books.

As I reviewed mariner’s compass blocks I got a little worried about having enough time to finish an intricate block, but this pattern seemed to tick all the boxes. To me, it reads like a simplified mariner’s compass and as a bonus also reminds me of men’s ties.

What a great skill-building project this turned out to be! I typically avoid Y-seams and templates like the plague, and this is a template pattern full of Y-seams. I had to rip out the first section because I didn’t even have the pieces oriented properly. Section two required ripping but was smoother. Sections three and four went together so easily it was almost scary. Then I relaxed and, well, a number of the background sections needed ripping. It’s true – Y-seams aren’t all that bad, you just have to find the groove and don’t get cocky!

So – as I mentioned, the cranberry and cream sections remind me of a man’s tie. The gray diamonds are waves and surf in recognition of the naval inspiration. Back years ago when I bought the border fabric I thought it looked like buttons – still do. There are lots of well-dressed man influences here for me. Thanks to my friend Wendy for the title. About the cleverest I could be was “Sharp Dressed Sofa,” which really isn’t all that clever.

Pillow measures 18” square, machine quilted top, envelope-style back. My name is Sue L and I quilt in West Hartford, Connecticut.

Oh, and the pattern is from Jen Kingwell’s book Quilt So Lovely. Any and all construction problems were the fault of my technical skill (or lack thereof), not the pattern.

My inspiration for this challenge - The Well Dressed Man - is the Green Bay Packers. The well dressed man wears green and gold - Go Pack Go!!!
I was born in Wisconsin and still have family ties there. The love for the Packers is tied to my roots and our passion for the Pack runs deep. I made this table topper to use on game days.

Tie-ing it all Together

"Tie-ing it all together". Recycled men's clothing used: suits, shirts, belt and one tie- just to tie it all together.

Technique: Paper piecing. Size: 15x15 inches and enough fabrics to make a production line of handbags.

Project Quilting 8.5-Well Dressed Man-

My Dressed man wears Jeans.

He's got his work jeans and his church jeans. He's always just worn Jeans.

I can tell you I have only seen him wear dress pants once and it was for 3 hours and as soon as he could get back into jeans, he did. My boys are just the same and want to sleep in theirs!!

I took 2 well worn pairs of carhartts and created a 12 x 56 runner and 4 - 12 x 10 placemats and I added 5.5 inch and 3.5 in hexie's using a ruler I've had forever but didn't know how to use. No better time to learn then now !!. Everything is raw edge sewing and applique.

I am calling this " Invite Jean to Dinner "

I created this in the middle of nowhere Dickens Texas.

Pocket Squares for Tim Gunn

I am Theresa Bradley. I quilt in Powder Springs, GA. I used a Goodwill repurposed pinstripe jacket for the pockets. The miniature pocket squares were folded and stitched into the pockets.

I call it 'Pocket squares for Tim Gunn.' It is 18 x 6.

The Power of Positive Thinking

The Power of Positive Thinking design was created in Make the Cut software and the power plug was cut with my electronic cutter.

The crystal ball and text are die cut and embellished with ribbons. The background is gelli printed and is quilted with opalescent thread.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Name of wall hanging- "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"
Size- 17 inches x 18 inches

Inspiration- The ties on the challenge page reminded me of the boxes of interesting ties I have collected to use someday in a quilt. Sometimes when men get dressed up they remind me of roosters strutting around. We also love to see the fancy roosters at the county fair, with their beautiful feathers and independent spirits. Then the rooster had to have some hens, so why not "blonde" hens, thus the title "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (for you youngsters, that is an old movie title).

I used a copyright free image of a rooster and created the rest as I went along, using fabrics from my fabric pantry. The rooster and hens are made of the silk fabric from mens ties. The background is cotton and the barn is batik.The tail feathers are quilted with feather quilting, and the rest is free motion quilted. I used a multi-colored tie for the binding.

Summer Loving

Although it is fun to admire Beckham, Huisman, Elba and other dreamy celebrities, I chose to capture a day in the life of my favorite man, Russ, loving life in his element.

After picking this image, I uploaded it to the pic2pat.com. The site allows you to created a cross stitch pattern out of your own photo. Once printed I used my colored pencils to get an idea where colors should go. Then I cut up the paper pattern to create templates for each applique piece.

A special shout out to Joy, another PQ participant, who posted her man in bowtie work in progress. She responded to my Facebook call for help while working on the face details.

Thanks to Project Quilting, I am really learning to take chances. As one other participant said, an opportunity to create proof of concept. Who knew, I could make an applique quilt, who in my opinion, really looks like my friend.

We’ve Gone to Plaid

My quilt is called "We've Gone to Plaid" for Project Quilting season 8 challenge 5 titled well-dressed man. I was looking through the tumbler of the men in suits that was in the inspiration section of the challenge post, and started thinking about men in skirts. So I was then thinking about kilts and plaid. Without thinking too much about how much of a challenge it would be, I searched plaid quilts and didn't see a pattern available that I liked, so I figured I would make my own.

I did some google searches about plaid and came up with a wrapping paper that I thought looked nice. So I took a screen shot, printed a photo, then went to the office supply store to get graph paper. After figuring out how the plaid worked and doing the math to figure out how much I needed I got to choose the fabrics. There are 15 different Kona Cotton Solids in this quilt. A few of the colors are not my faves, but they were necessary to make the plaid work.

I cut all the pieces for the entire quilt first - then following my map I started piecing the blocks. I got 3 rows finished Sunday evening watching the Oscars. Then, Monday I finished the quilt top and tossed it on the long arm for wavy line quilting to soften all the right angles.

Tuesday I prepped and sewed the binding to the quilt and then pressed it for hand stitching. Today, I finished the hand binding and can call it done. :D This piece finishes at 84" square and was made in Madison, WI.
