Carol's chosen spiritual name was Willow.  She had a knack for getting everyone around her to see and believe in the beauty of life.  Even while she was enduring multiple surgeries and treatments for the cancer that was attacking her body, she was traveling internationally with friends and having parties to celebrate life. 

I chose a heart-shaped labyrinth for this final quilt in the series because Willow embodied pure love and joy.  I like to think of her in the center of this labyrinth with waves of violet love pouring over the world from her crown chakra.

‘Spot’ by Betsy Vinegrad

This last challenge was done at a guild weekend retreat. Packing the violet, a small stash of cherrywood scraps, a 24" square of backing, batting and a variety of thread, I challenged myself to start and complete it there. It was fun auditioning ideas with the group of 20+ quilters.

When the top was hanging on the wall, one of the members said it looked like a tipsy dog. Hence, the title, Spot. Using a walking foot, the snowballs were quilted in a spiral with 12 weight violet thread.

The backfill is an elongated #4 wavy stitch on a Bernina using 50 weight thread.

When I brought it home, my son annotated it with ears, mouth and tongue.

The center 9 patch becomes a disappearing 9 patch and then a double disappearing 9 patch. 

The batiks have a system of movement which adds to the disappearing act.  The tatted V, for violet, is very visible.  :)

I finally finished my October challenge. I started it and then didn't
have enough of the light purple fabric. I found the place to order it
from and then had to wait for it to arrive.

"Who's Stirring the Pot"

Since I only had purple and orange fabric left I decided to do a
Halloween quilt. The nine patch was hard to incorporate into a quilt
but I loved the witch and decided to surround her with nine patches.
I'm looking forward to next month's challenge but I'm hoping it will
be easier than the nine patch.

“My House is a Very Very Fine House” by Sharon Scott

For July’s Focus Through the Prism Challenge I chose the violet Cherrywood fabric and decided to create a quilt that would really showcase the Cherrywood Fabric.  While creating this wavy curve log cabin I reflected upon the meaning of house and home and also thought a lot about my love of architecture.  This fascination with architecture has been influenced by two architects, Sarah Susanka of the Not So Big House ideas and Frank Lloyd Wright both of whom have designs related to organic architecture as a reflection of nature.  So I had my ideas but didn’t have a name yet. Then I heard a song by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young  and that settled it.  My quilt top is called "My House is a Very Very Fine  House". I think the lyrics say it all about wanting a house filled with love and flowers.  

I'll light the fire, you put the flowers in the vase that you bought today.
Staring at the fire for hours and hours while I listen to you
Play your love songs all night long for me, only for me.
Come to me now and rest your head for just five minutes, everything is good.
Such a cozy room, the windows are illuminated by the

I decided to use a dragon fly for my purple flower.  I used beads in every circle I quilted on the flower.  I think this is my favorite.

I love scary movies, spooky art, and everything Halloween. I love to warp whatever I'm making into Halloween quilts.  When I saw the ROYGBIV rainbow colors and the fact that this challenge was using traditional blocks, I knew I would have to work hard to translate all of this into spooky stuff. But what fun!! I love the monkeywrench on point (makes it scary, don't you think?) I added the pinwheels in the center just for grins. But I have to 'fess up, I took the easy way out and chose the violet for my nighttime sky. 

Can't wait for next month!
