Put a Heart on it.

I am in Denmark visiting family, enjoying the peaceful countryside and finishing my entry for the PQ 11.3 challenge. 

The first thing that came to mind when I saw the challenge was that song Jar of Hearts. I zipped through my stash. Found a few little scraps, nothing even approaching an eighth of a yard, lol. I knew it had to be small because time was tight in my schedule right before vacation but I am committed to making something for each challenge this year.

This sweet little Jar of Stolen Hearts, made during stolen time, is an improv, approx 15" sq. I hand bound it and embellished with embroidery thread. The stolen hearts in my jar, are fussy cut and embellished. 

There is a booboo, made at 3:30 am on the travel morning, which is hopefully not terribly obvious. I took care the evening before, but then made the error which I did not find until it was too late. Perhaps that is actually ok as a design element. I had fun, though. 

 I took a few pix. Will begin playing with adding notions to pix. 

Look, there is the super little weekly prize, Sewing Notions Bag by Moda I won last challenge. Whoohoo. It is perfect for holding little bits for little quilts. 

Oh, and realized that my MIL still has my Danish sewing machine here in storage! She is awesome.

Denim Quilted Heart by Kelly Barnum

It's a table topper (16" x 16") with hearts in the design of a couple fabrics, and a heart quilted in the denim in each corner. It's made entirely of "leftovers" - scraps of batting and fabric from prior projects, upcycled jeans, and green linen cut from an old tablecloth! I'm going to make 8 mug rugs with the fabric that's still left (there's not enough left of the 2 heart fabrics to make placemats, although I may still make some coordinating placemats with the denim, green linen and some other red print fabric from my stash!).

I'm so glad I found the Project Quilting Challenge! I'm someone who can spend waaaay too much time in the planning/designing/dreaming phase, often changing my mind or adjusting a design half-way into the making of it - lol. So, to challenge myself with a 1-week time requirement, start to finish, has been amazing!

Project Quilting Challenge 11.3 ~ Put a Heart on it

We were in Belize visiting friends when this week’s challenge came out. My friend told me I should do I heart Belize. Then I found a heart shaped leaf in her driveway! I took a picture of the leaf on the sand and printed it on fabric to use for the heart shape. I embroidered the Belize and used a zig zag stitch to create the big I.

I decided to make all 6 PQ challenges 18”x12” this year so I’ll have a set of placemats when I’m done. I’m putting a different purple batik on the back of each of them so they are reversible. I’m using a different fancy stitch for each to attach the binding. For the label, I’m writing on the back on the binding.

My quilt is 18”x12”. #ProjectQuilting #pqSeason11

This was created for an online challenge called Project Quilting. You get a week to complete a whole quilt based on a theme. There is no voting this year. Prizes will be given out by random drawing. This week’s theme was Put a Heart on it.

Valentine Ornament by Sharon Scott

This heart themed Valentine ornament complete with a candy pocket  is for a dear friend who is a textile artist whose work often includes hearts.

I am typically more of a modern and improv quilter so this was out of my wheelhouse, especially using the decorative heart stitch.  It was interesting to me how my motivation was different when making this project.

I love heart quilts. This was fun. I was able to use up some leftover scraps from other projects. The hearts are paper pieced. The quilt is made from all batik fabrics. It measures 30 high by 32 wide.

This was fun to make! I used 2 inch squares which ended up 1 1/2 inch finished. Some stitch in the ditch quilting, and I think the black polka dots really make it pop. Its purpose is to be a piece of art.

Valentine Door Hanger by Robyn W

This is a 7-inch square mini quilted Valentine door hanger. Our condo is pretty sterile so I want to add a bit of color to the hallway.  I decided to challenge myself to sewing small squares and then machine bind it rather than hand-sew the back of the piece. 

I’m normally not very good at matching up the squares but I persevered and except for one square, nailed it. I’m happy. I also machine bound it on both sides and used an antique blanket stitch which is my favorite stitch.

I decided to use my hand dyed bits for the coloured parts and made a table runner.. Also I have the Simply Crazy little ruler had to try!! I made the runner.. Quilt as u go method..

Then just.... Put A Heart on it.. appliquéd... The purple heart is a thought for the brave men and women and animals (dogs and horses ect) from past and present.

Things I Love by Siri Sinha

I LOVED this challenge.  I got to use bonus HSTs and stash scraps to make my heart wall hanging representing things I love:  string piecing, felines, treadle sewing (fabric purchased at The Electric Needle), veggies, Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, Texas, and purple.  

I sewed the 22x33" wall hanging on my 1951 Singer 301 and quilted it on my HQ Fusion (computer and free motion).  Thanks for a fun challenge!!!

I Found a Quilted Heart by Jill M

The heart is 6 inches long and 3 inches wide. The top layer is a red hear, appliquéd onto and red/white heart I cut in a semi "rick-rack" pattern. I sandwiched it with batting and backed it with a different red fabric. Then placed all the wrong sides together and stitched. Then tuned them inside out to have the right sides facing out. Then embellished it and added ribbon to hand.

People all over are leaving quilted hearts to be found and kept my the person finding it. A little act of random kindness to to speak. The website is tracking the number of heart found, over 16,000 to date!

Lovely Garden by Mary Chappelle

Challenge 11.3 – “Put a Heart on It” February 2020

This little quilt was inspired by a lovely garden next to a trail where I frequently walk my dog. The fence along the side has the back of a small wooden gazebo structure and there are two hearts cut into the back. Two people sitting there would be very close indeed!

 

The yard is huge, perhaps an acre or more, and the people who live there work tirelessly in their yard. The yard is divided into numerous garden areas with different types of plants, as well as water features.

When I stopped one day to tell the woman how much I admired and liked her garden, she told me she created it so that people would have something pretty to look at! Well, she has definitely succeeded.

I always think the hearts are a sweet addition to everything else that’s heartwarming in the yard.

My Bunny Angel Has a Heart of Gold by Diane C

PQ 11.3—My Bunny Angel Has a Heart of Gold (11” x 14 ½”)

This project will go to my daughter for her 39^th birthday in March.  Angela is my Bunny Girl.  With a birthday close to Easter, she received stuffed bunnies as an infant instead of teddy bears.  Over the years, we have morphed that idea into a Bunny Angel, and she certainly has a Heart of Gold.  

She has worked with developmentally disabled adults, after doing her best to advocate for disabled students in high school.  These days, she and her fiancé take full time care of his mother who has dementia.  My Bunny Angel has a heart of gold and she has my heart as well.

Sea Turtle Sewing Machine Cover by Anneliese B

My challenge quilt this week is a sewing machine cover I created to match the batik sewing mat my sister made for me. The batik on the mat has purple and yellow sea turtles which I have always loved so I chose to create a turtle with hearts on his shell. luckily I had a snow day today or I might not have finished.
