Free Styling & Spiraling Complementary Colors by Cindy M

PQ 17.5 Complementary Colors

On February 28th, I took a class with Mel Beach called “Free Styling & Spiraling” (I highly recommend the class) and I was so happy this new technique would work with this week’s challenge. My first idea was a blue and orange butterfly with spiraling triangles for wings (I have quilt top made but need to quilt, turn it into a pillow and post it at some point). I decided to keep making triangles but switched to purple and yellow.

This approximately 9” by 34” wall hanging was the result. I love the technique but need to see if I can get a more consistent size triangular block – the improv nature of the technique means that not all the blocks are exactly the same size. I didn’t want to lose the spiral on any blocks, so the piece is not rectangular. This was a fun and very colorful challenge.

The Mountains by Megan C

I loved this challenge. Had a lot of fun with the mountains. I muted the sun and the streaks in the sky by placing them beneath the pale yellow fabric. I’d never don’t that before, but liked the effect.

This quilt measures 14x18. It is cotton/cotton blend. Machine done with the exception of the binding.

My Complements Tote Bag by Robin B

Our new challenge

I made a tote bag out of a blue daisy print. I appliquéd an orange daisy on the front. I lined it with a bright yellow. I’m out of my comfort zone with this color combination. Thanks for challenging me.

Of Another Era by Cyndy

In the 60s I was given a gorgeous piece of linen with horses ( I have always been horse crazy - now over 60 years old this vintage linen brings back memories but also is repurposed to a pouch so I can continue to enjoy #Project QUILTING season.

Of Another Era by Jacomina

This challenge, "era", came into focus when the death of Rev. Jesse Jackson was announced this week. The Rainbow Coalition was started during his 1984 presidential campaign and two sentences from his speech at the 1984 Democratic Convention is often quoted. However, there was a third sentence which I used to design my challenge this week.

The quote:
"America is not like a blanket -- one piece of unbroken cloth, the same color, the same texture, the same size. America is more like a quilt: many patches, many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven and held together by a common thread. The White, the Hispanic, the Black, the Arab, the Jew, the woman, the Native American, the small farmer, the businessperson, the environmentalist, the peace activist, the young, the old, the lesbian, the gay and disabled make up the American quilt."

It was great fun to search my stash to represent some of the many facets of this American quilt. Of course, rainbow colors in three blocks, but also:
- a block which bring rural and urban together with urban folks visiting rural areas in their campers;
- a block representing USA in its colors and constitutional institutions;
- Native American/South West;
- African American and Kwanzaa;
- one block focusing on love and cooperation; and,
- one improv blue/green block to represent the environmentalists.

The back is cheater cloth, depicting yet more hearts to urge us to love another.

The "bear hug" quilt will go with a stuffed animal to a child in trauma.

Of Another Era by Lynn M

I have an unfinished quilt that my great grandmother made years ago. These are two leftover squares. The light squares were cut from flour sacks. She cut the star materials and appliquéd them onto flour sacks.

Kick by Jacomina

 My interpretation immediately went to how I hope we can turn towards a more hopeful future.

I promised my church I would make a banner with that theme but that turned out to be beyond my energy levels.

So: a quick coaster where the cowboy boot can be seen to either kick out the past year or kick in a more hopeful future.

Year of the Fire Horse by Carolyn R

A rocking horse and as well as a red border since it's a red fire horse year.

In our house, we were born during  the year of the sheep and the year of the pig, so those fabrics are in this project.

I'm calling in joy, love, good health, and peacefulness with the yellow fabrics.

Lil Lady by Melissa B

My project is called Lil Lady

I am not much of a horse person. The only horse related anything in my stash was this little cowgirl and her stick horse. I made the little doll quilt which has country flower and Horseshoe fabric. Lil Lady is optimistic about 2026 and her future. Hoping we can all be inspired by her childlike imagination of riding into the sunset on her stick horse. Yeh Haw!

NICU quilt by Clare

This is a small quilt, 32” x 32”, which will be used as an isolette, a special purpose cover
for use in a NICU to control the light environment of a baby.

Blue is January’s Rainbow Scrap Challenge colour, (from https://superscrappy.blogspot.com/p/rsc-2023.html), so I had fun pulling out blues in light, medium and dark to make my own ‘plaid' fabric.

Cruising in Plaid by Melissa B

I wanted to make a quilted wall hanging to hang on our cabin door on our upcoming valentine day cruise. I looked up plaid quilt ideas and made my own plaid look blocks. I used a pink plaid fabric for the binding. I realized I had no plaid in my stash , so I guess that means I need fabric!
