Minnie Quilt by Robyn W

This doll was made for me by my dad’s mother; I think I received her when I was four or five. I named her Minnie after Grandma Minnie Mizell and she’s been a part of my life for a very L O N G time, making the two of us definitely vintage!

This is a combination of fabrics from the “Tambourine” 10” Charm Pack, the “Just Red” 5” Charm Pack and the Bella Solids Layer Cake “Snow” that I recently bought at a store in Middleton, WI. I also used one of my favorites from my stash for the binding that I hand stitched. I still struggle somewhat when using a narrower binding. Any tips would  be appreciated.

I used my machine for the antique blanket stitch to appliqué all of the pieces before finishing with hand embroidery for Minnie’s dress, face and hair. The “lace” at her neck and hands is a very delicate ribbon that was difficult to work with but I persevered and was satisfied with it. I think it looks tattered like the original lace.

  1. What a sweet little quilt your vintage doll inspired! As for narrow binding, you have to find the strip width that works for you. Most of my narrow binding is but 2", but a slightly thicker fabric can bring that cut up to 2.25", if necessary. If you're not sure, cut a small section and do a test binding on your piece to make sure what you plan will work comfortably for you.

    1. Thank you for your advice. I typically begin with a 2 1/2" strip but this one was 1 1/2" and I suppose with arthritic hands, that could have been why it was difficult. I realize a 2 1/2 might not work for such a small quilt but I think I'll practice and see if I can live with it!! Again, thanks, Robyn
