Log Cabin Quilt Block for July.
When I think of log cabins, I think of Fall and pretty colored leaves.
I think of the family tree in the heart of the home so I call this
Logs Wrapped Around the Family Tree.

This was my second attempt at a quilt for this month. I had the idea that I would make red log cabin blocks, off center, and sew them together on point to look like shingles, and make a spooky house out of them. Made a lot of them...2" finished size. Sewed them all together and cut a house out of them. Didn't work. It's kind of hard to make log cabin blocks look spooky.... they're just too wholesome, or traditional, or something! Started over! I gave up and used them for my wall. I like them now!!

The funny thing is I haven't come up with a clever name for my quilt. The inspiration for this quilt was an off center log cabin class I took at my guild retreat with Eileen Sullivan.
Thanks to the challenge I have another new technique to explore.
"Spots of Delight"
This blue Cherrywood color jumped out at me from the moment I saw it. I knew when the right block came along that the blue would hold its own amongst lots of other colors.
The log cabin block's unending possibilities made it easy to work in all of the colors while letting the blue shine.

I fell in love with the illusion of this layout of quarter log cabin blocks and found an ombre fabric in green that gave me the gradations necessary to carry the design.

Here's my 'Improv Log Cabin'. This is my venture into Modern Quilting after taking several classes with Jackie Gering. I'm loving this challenge.

I started this quilt as a folded log cabin, but conversation with a beloved friend revealed the illusion of the quilt unfurling or unfolding. I thought, "unfolding to what?"
So after a bit, I decided to finish the quilt as a traditional log cabin to sharpen the illusion. And I bound it in the same fabric as the center.
Because I realized, we are born exactly who we are, but life and society heap layers of "stuff" upon us, and we spend our lives trying to reclaim the person we know ourselves deeply to be.
So here I am. Unfolding. Back to myself.

While making this month's challenge, I remembered many happy times with my dear friend, Carol. She lived in a house that began as a log cabin. It had been enlarged over the years but the logs were evident in the structure.
We played by by the stream at the edge of the property, created a labyrinth around an old pear tree, and had many happy times there. Yellow is the happy color of the third path of the labyrinth and the Solar Plexus Chakra
Log Cabin = House
House = Home
So I'm calling it "Home Is Where the Heart Is"

Life is so hectic and complicated during the summer months that I made a place your mind can be at peace and the sight brings calmness to your heart. Sitting by a cabin next to the creek with the cool mountains in the background brings inward peace and contentment to my soul.
July-2015, 3rd Challenge Quilt, for Focus through the Prism. This month ‘Log Cabin’ was the required block and medium blue is my chosen Cherrywood Fabric color.

My block for July was inspired by an embroidered tea towel that my mom had made many years ago. My mom loved to embroider and I made many of her pieces into quilts for the family. I found this "sunny” piece of stitchery in a box of linens that I have been saving and this was a wonderful way to incorporate her work with something that I created. This has been a wonderful project to design and sew and quilt. I am very pleased with the outcome. It makes me smile and brings back wonderful memories of Mom.
I added multicolored glass teardrop beads around the sun for a little extra sparkle and punch of color.
The quilting was fun as I tried some different textures to enhance the block.
Cutting the block a little wonky was fun … but really tested my “traditional” approach to quilting.
I am very happy with the end results.

Inspired by 4th of July firework displays, and facing a long road trip, I decided to stitch one large Log Cabin, then quilt and bind it before my trip so I could embroider fireworks on the road.
The Log Cabin block is a symbol of hearth and home and July is the month when we celebrate the birth of our homeland. It all seem to fit with the Indigo Blue.

Susan Kerr's Log Cabin Project
When my forever friend moved to North Carolina we had to find a way to quilt together so we were excited to find this challenge to work on together. It allows us to keep in touch better also since work really cuts into talking and quilting time (haha). She is really creative and inspires me!
Orange was decided on for July and since I love fall I decided I needed to have a pumpkin. I incorporated several techniques including log cabin blocks that allow the project to have a curved look. My border is a piece of fabric that has just Jack o' lantern faces on a green background...kind of like planning what your carved pumpkin will look like before it is ripe. I have been saving this fabric forever to be used in just the right project and this was it!

Whole Cloth Log Cabin Quilt by Vicki Anda for the Log Cabin Focus Through the Prism Project QUITLING Challenge
I decided to do the log cabin as whole cloth, light blue thread on on half of pattern, dark blue other half with a red center, and I made the design "pop" with trapunto technique.
Then I fold backing and front into each other and sewed together for binding. Not sure if that has a name such as self binding.
The caveat, it is TOO small!!! My brain never engaged that fat quarter is only 18" wide, if you are lucky. Decided to send to you any way. Vicky

July Challenge - Log cabin in the woods – Zeeda Magnuson
When I saw that the July challenge block was a log cabin, my train of thought was…..using the Cherrywood green to make a “sod” log cabin which made me think of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House on the Prairie, and the Sunbonnet Sue pattern.
So, this is my interpretation of the above mentioned elements. I used all shades of green for the log cabin home, keeping the roof the same fabric as the ground cover. I wanted to use Sunbonnet Sue because she is a pattern that is tied to Minnesota. And, I wanted her companion, Overall Bill to join her. I also added the pine trees even though they were not prevalent in the prairie, but I thought that Bill and Sue may have added them as a nice wind break for their log cabin sod home.
July Log Cabin Challenge – Linkin Logs by Evelyn Larrison
Here is my Log Cabin tribute. I used the Lincoln Logs I played with as a kid to inspire me. I chose the orange fabric but also used creams and browns Cherrywood fabric for the logs. The back ground is a woven solid fabric. I only had a fat quarter but once I saw the fabric nothing else would do. I had to piece three blocks and ended with about 2" of scraps.
For July’s Focus Through the Prism Challenge I chose the violet Cherrywood fabric and decided to create a quilt that would really showcase the Cherrywood Fabric. While creating this wavy curve log cabin I reflected upon the meaning of house and home and also thought a lot about my love of architecture. This fascination with architecture has been influenced by two architects, Sarah Susanka of the Not So Big House ideas and Frank Lloyd Wright both of whom have designs related to organic architecture as a reflection of nature. So I had my ideas but didn’t have a name yet. Then I heard a song by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and that settled it. My quilt top is called "My House is a Very Very Fine House". I think the lyrics say it all about wanting a house filled with love and flowers.
