Mood Ring III by Nancy L

I was so excited to see this challenge and knew immediately what I wanted to create! I love creating hexagons quilts and I have previously created two wall quilts, Mood Ring I and Mood Ring II. (Do you remember Mood Rings and did you have one when you were growing up? I did! ).

This little Mail Art piece is called Mood Ring III! (for my “micro- moods!)

Helix Quilt by Carol H

Almost decided not to do a quilt this week, and this one is a 3.5 day wonder. But: the scalding news from East Lansing on Monday put this idea in my head, and it wouldn’t go away, so here we are.

The book inspiration is The Double Helix (#ad), by James D. Watson; a lively autobiographical account of the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. It was required reading at an high school science honor program at Michigan State University in 1972. MSU was an amazing place to be as a teenage girl interested in science, and I never looked back. Strong connections there always and I know they will carry on with their mission to open up the world to students.

Pattern is called Helix from Richard and Tanya Quilts. http://blog.richardandtanyaquilts.com

Magical Friends by Kathy P

"Magical Friends " 18" x 44" is composed of 15 cuttings I found in a grab bag.

These scenes from the "Winnie the Pooh" (#ad) series bring back fond memories of books we shared with our children years ago. It was a real challenge to take the random sized cuts and try to assemble a banner, next time I would probably frame the pictures with wonky sashings.

The Hidden Staircase quilt by Katie R

PQ14.4 A Novel Project “The Hidden Staircase” (#ad).
Books—YAY!!! I love books. Inspiration came from this beautiful book fabric, my love of mysteries and a comment from my sister, “…a Nancy Drew staircase riff would be fun.” My parents liked to read and the local library was on the next block. It seemed like I was there all the time as a kid. Apparently the staff thought so too—when I was 16, they offered me a job as a page, later at the circulation desk. I loved it!

While I read lots of fiction and some non-fiction, I kept coming back to Nancy Drew, my introduction to mysteries. I soon moved on to Agatha Christie, and then a whole new world of mystery writers. Some of my favorite detectives are listed on the backside of the door. My interests range from classics of mid-20th century, a medieval monk, a Roman informer and his daughter. Contemporary detectives with special connections include cooking, quilting, a tea shop, Indigenous People, Chicago ( my home town), Door County and an Armenian American detective. All offer hours of enjoyment and now I have a piece to remember them.

Many thanks for this great challenge!

Jane Eyre Quilt by Siri S

My favorite novel is Jane Eyre (#affiliate ad) by Charlotte Bronte. Jane becomes an orphan at an early age, but never loses her sense of independence in finding love and belonging.

This mini is made up of orphan blocks who just want to be loved and belong. There's one block that represents Jane, different from the rest, but just as beautiful and important. A famous quote from Jane is: "I am no bird; and no net ensnares me. I am a free human being with an independent will."
Thanks for the inspiration; I'm about to read this novel for the 3rd time!

The Dot Quilt by Teri D

My quilt was inspired by the book The Dot (#ad) by Peter H. Reynolds. It’s a very popular book in elementary classrooms. It’s about a girl who thinks she can’t draw in art class. The teacher tells her to just make a dot and sign her name to her picture. The teacher displays the picture for all the classes. The girl looks at it and decides to do a better one. It becomes a journey of different dot pictures. I can relate to it because I can’t draw either, but I need to remember that I can still create interesting things.

I created my Dots Quilt out of left over strips from a different project. I used the same leftover strips on a different challenge, and still had plenty left for this one. It was a lot of fun to create. The bright colors always make me smile.

Inkheart Quilt by Theresa B

Inkheart

Several years ago my daughter and I both read Inkheart (#ad). We have all felt drawn into a book but Maggie and her father Mo bring things and characters out of books when they read aloud. However, these are replaced with things and people from the real world. It is an exciting book with a mediocre movie. I have represented the things and characters that were brought out.

Kindle Case by Hannah D

This week I decided to make a travel bag for my Kindle. I pulled out this fabric printed with dictionary pages that I was saving for the right project. I bought it a couple years ago in a small quilt shop in Bath,

England after visiting the Jane Austen (#ad) museum there. I love her books, particularly Persuasion. This fabric and now this project will always be associated with Jane Austen in my mind.

Bountiful Charity Quilt & Stitch Along

A Hunger by Deborah W

My favorite guilty pleasure is trashy, supernatural romance novels. A novel that I enjoyed is A Hunger Like No Other (#ad) by Kresley Cole. (Note: Novel for mature audiences only. Quilt safe for all ages!)

In the story, Lachlain MacRieve, a Scot who is king of the lycaes (werewolves) breaks away from 150 years of torture by a never-ending fire to claim his fated mate. In my 26" x 30" quilt, the paper pieced wolf includes a plaid to represent Scotland and flames to acknowledge his recent captivity. I purchased the pattern from #nerdyquilterdesigns.

His fated mate, Emmaline Troy, is half Valkyrie/half vampire. When she experiences strong emotion, lightning fills the sky. For her, I appliqued shiny silver lightning bolts.

For both, when the moon is full, the magic really happens.

The Walking Dead Quilt by Judy C

My Flowers in the Rain quilt got delayed due to a stubborn longarm and therefore can't be quilted till it is fixed. I decided to do a smaller one that I could quilt on my regular sewing machine.

My son-in-law works on movies and TV shows and I don't care for the genre of these shows to watch them. However, I don't mind reading the book and then making him a quilt to remember the production. So here is my entry from The Walking Dead (#ad).

The Door Ajar by Jacomina

In my teen/college years I was very taken with a Dutch author Max Dendermonde (#ad). In my memory, his book, The Door Ajar, literally opened up a door to a world of adults who were very different from the stratified 1950's environment in which I was raised.

I am showing the door ajar leading to a wild world of colour, Brendan Marlo's fabric and his personality both personify "this world beyond" that so beckoned me.

This wall hanging is inspired by the book The House with Chicken Legs (#ad) by Sophie Anderson. Jane Austen Inspiration by Sharon F

Janes (#ad) famous quilt in subdued color, perfect semetry. Her diamonds sashed with polka dot
He fabrics were florals

I have a nod to her diamond shape and polka dot

My diamonds are only sashed on one side
I did not use floral fabric; however I did embroider a couple of basic flowers.
I did not replicate semetry.

I am a fan of red and white. I alternated a solid white on white polka dot with a gingham check sashing with the gingham of a different size or a white with black dot
I like the nod to Janes meticulous work in the whimsy of mine.

A Novel Project by Nancy I

Years ago, I read Dr. Seuss (#ad) books out loud to my children. Sometimes the words just rolled off of my tongue, and with some of his books my mouth didn't like the ways it had to move. Still, I would persevere and make it to the end of each book. I ripped out the directions for "Out on a Limb" from American Patchwork & Quilting, Dec 2008. The accompanying picture reminded me of the fanciful creations in his books. I amazed myself that I was able to find these pages. I traced the patterns forward and backward onto fusible paper.

A friend suggested layering my two 8 foot long tables with double layers of batting, spreading out the background muslin, then arranging the pieces, and using a hot iron on top of the pieces to fuse them onto the background. This saved me from trying to move everything over to my ironing board. I chose the red fabric because in my stash I had more of it than any other red. I didn't even know I had such a large piece of muslin. I quilted it with "Surf" from Anne Bright Designs. It mimics the curly horns. The tiny red polka dot for binding and backing is another red I found in my stash. The finished size is 44 x 67 inches.
